A delightful town built during the Roman Empire, Saturnia is one of the Maremma’s major tourist destinations.
Definitely worth a visit, it has an ancient and interesting history, gorgeous natural landscape and fantastic art and cultural heritage.
The history of Saturnia begins in Roman times.
It was later ruled by numerous Italian noble families including the Aldobrandeschi and the Orsini, followed by the Republic of Siena, who held on to power until its annexation into Grand Duchy of Tuscany.
Saturnia has plenty of monuments that are worth a visit including the Church of Santa Maria Maddalena, the Palazzo Ciacci, the Roman Columns, the town-walls and the Porta Romana.
