Myths and Legends
The God Saturn and the Birth of Terme di Saturnia
There are many legends about the birth of this miraculous water. According to Greek mythology and then Roman mythology, the god Saturn, angry at humans’ excessive quarrelsomeness constantly at war with each other, threw a lightning bolt onto Earth, creating a crater from which warm water began to gush out. From mists produced by the heat of these waters, a renewed humanity emerged, wiser and more aware.
The Legend of Dry Bath
Another legend related to the waters of Saturnia is linked to the mythological figure Paladin Orlando who arrived in these lands following Charlemagne.
According to orally transmitted stories, both Orlando and Rinaldo, paladins of France, passed through Saturnia during their journey to Rome. When they reached a place that is still called ‘Buca dei Paladini’ (Paladins’ Hole), Rinaldo mysteriously disappeared. This prompted Orlando to search for him and he arrived under the walls of Saturnia, which were then under the control of infidels. Legend has it that Orlando’s horse named Vegliantino spoke to his master with these words: “Be strong, Orlando, and do not be afraid, for Vegliantino will cross the walls.” And so, in a single leap, the steed surpassed the city walls, leaving the imprint of its hoof on the pavement still visible today. Thus did Orlando liberate the city from the Saracens.
During the battle, however, the hero realized that enemies whom he had mortally wounded would reappear before him shortly after. Suspicious of this situation, Orlando asked an old woman for explanations. The old lady proposed a pact to the paladin: her son’s life in exchange for revelation. Orlando accepted and she revealed to him the secret of Saturnia. And so the hero discovered that inside the city there was a mysterious spring capable of healing any wound. Determined to win the fight, Orlando went to the miraculous pool and uttered these words: “O bath within Saturnia, go into the plain and heal rash and scab!” Suddenly, the basin dried up and then gushed forth further down in the valley away from town. From that moment on, that place was renamed by Saturnia’s inhabitants as Bagno Secco (Dry Bath).
