Lago di Bolsena
Il lago vulcanico più grande d'Europa
Lago di Bolsena

Located about a 1-hour drive from our B&B is the famous Lake Bolsena, situated in upper Lazio, on the border with Umbria and Tuscany, in the main caldera of the Vulsino volcanic complex.

This fascinating and suggestive place attracts thousands of tourists, especially during the summer season, as it represents a valid alternative to the typical seaside or mountain destinations.

There are many options for things to see and do at Lake Bolsena. In addition to its natural beauty, this location is also ideal for those who love history and culture.

The connection with the ancient Etruscan civilization, for example, is clearly visible in the hamlet of Cornossa, where the remains of an archaeological building dating back to the 5th century BC can be found.

Lake Bolsena also has two islands: Bisentina and Martana, which can be reached by boat tour. You cannot dock there, but you can observe some stunning buildings up close, including the seven churches of Bisentina.

Another place worth visiting is the geosite of “pietre lanciate” (thrown stones). These are debris of volcanic rock that over millennia have taken on unique shapes.

According to popular legend, these thrown stones are boulders expelled during the last volcano eruption.

The beautiful villages located along the shores of Lake Bolsena are also deserving of a visit.

Bolsena is undoubtedly one of the most picturesque and charming cities in upper Lazio. It stands out scenically from afar due to its compact appearance characterized by brown-colored rock made of tuff. The historic center has a partly medieval and partly Renaissance style, perfect for a relaxing stroll among characteristic shops and restaurants. The area around the fortress is particularly evocative, composed of local stone houses that give it a typical look of an ancient fishing village.

Capodimonte is one of the smaller and most characteristic villages overlooking Lake Bolsena. Nestled on a promontory, Capodimonte offers suggestive and romantic landscapes, ideal for spending a pleasant day surrounded by history and nature.

Marta is situated at an altitude of 315 meters in a picturesque position on the southern shore of Lake Bolsena. The medieval village is perched on a small hill from where you can also see Martana Island. The tuff houses, characteristic narrow streets, staircases, and passageways make Marta one of the most charming villages in Tuscia. Additionally, the large octagonal Clock Tower and the remains of the Rocca (fortress) are clearly visible, which belonged to Pope Urban IV.
