Monte Argentario
La splendida Costa d'Argento
Monte Argentario

Monte Argentario is a charming Tuscan promontory that overlooks the crystal-clear waters of the Tyrrhenian Sea. This place, once an Etruscan outpost, has faced it all, from Roman invasions and Turkish pirate attacks to the Spanish occupation of the 17th century and bombings during World War II. Today, Argentario is a place of contrasts between fashion and tradition, with incredible seafood restaurants, bars, and nightclubs coexisting with places where local fishermen still sell their catch of the day.

The best way to explore the rocky hills of the Argentario promontory is to follow SP 45 or Panoramica road. The best spot to enjoy a spectacular view is Capo d’Uomo, from where you can see all the nearby islands. Additionally, from Argentario you can take ferries to the islands of the Tuscan Archipelago.

The promontory is home to two fascinating villages: Porto Santo Stefano and Porto Ercole. Porto Santo Stefano, the largest village on the promontory, has a very ancient history and houses the imposing Spanish Fortress. Porto Ercole, listed among Italy’s most beautiful villages, is rich in historic buildings and breathtaking beaches.

Argentario is also a paradise for diving enthusiasts, with numerous diving spots along its coast. Among these are the wreck of a sunken ship, Nasim, and Formiche di Grosseto, where the natural beauty of the coral reef is enhanced by archaeological remains that have fallen from ships over centuries.

Finally, one cannot forget about Argentario’s proximity to Giglio and Giannutri islands, both part of the Tuscan Archipelago National Park, as well as to the city of Orbetello famous for its lagoon.
