Pitigliano
The little Jerusalem
Pitigliano

Pitigliano is a characteristic town in the heart of the Tufo area and one of the most beautiful villages in Italy, as well as having the Orange Flag distinction. It is located just 25 km from our property.

Also known as Little Jerusalem, because starting from the 16th century it hosted one of the largest Jewish communities in Maremma within its walls, Pitigliano is now a village with unique charm and represents an unmissable stop on a journey to discover Tuscany. The town captivates from the first glance. Pitigliano appears carved into the tuff, with houses perched on its cliffs surrounded by three moats (Meleta, Prochio, and Lente). One of the first things you will notice when arriving from Regional Road 74 is the Medici Aqueduct, an elegant structure for water supply, built by order of the Orsini family, continued during Medici times and then restored by the Lorraine family. Pitigliano is a precious treasure that preserves palaces and historic buildings of immense value including: the majestic Palazzo Orsini, the ancient residence of the Orsini family; Jewish Ghetto, the ancient quarter built from the end of the 16th century; Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul; and Church of San Rocco. Not to be missed are also the Archaeological Museum of Etruscan Civilization, located in a wing of Palazzo Orsini; Poggio Buco Necropolis; and Museo Archeologico all’aperto Manzi (Manzi Outdoor Archaeological Museum).

What to see:

Palazzo Orsini

Palazzo Orsini is one of Pitigliano’s iconic places. An imposing construction originally dating back to Aldobrandeschi times, renovated by the Orsini family between the 15th and 16th centuries. Today, it houses two museums: the Archaeological Civic Museum and the Museum of Palazzo Orsini.

Jewish Ghetto

The Jewish Ghetto is located in the historic center of Pitigliano and is one of the most charming places to visit. Here you will find old houses, shops, and the synagogue where Jews who inhabited it since the 16th century were confined. In this part of the city, you will also find the Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul.

Vie Cave

The Vie Cave are ancient paths built centuries ago by the Etruscans. They are a kind of corridors carved into the tuff rock, symbolizing Pitigliano. They are unique works in the world that deserve to be visited. Historically, it is believed that Vie Cave served to connect the three cities of Tufo – Pitigliano, Sovana, and Sorano – creating a kind of defensive system. Others hypothesize that they were mainly used for funerary purposes. Despite historical uncertainty about their use, they represent truly fascinating places, ideal for those who love taking long walks in nature. Inside Vie Cave near Gradone plateau is the open-air Archaeological Museum dedicated to Maestro Manzi. It is a route divided into two distinct areas connected by a path that leads to a site called “City of the Living” and “City of the Dead”. Here you can visit an ancient Etruscan dwelling and necropolises including San Giovanni’s Necropolis
